Al-Ahzab (The Confederates): Verse 27

...and He bequeathed to you their land, their dwellings, and their wealth...

Commentary:

There is a sequence here regarding the possessions:

  1. The believers first gained ownership of their land by settling upon it and taking control of it.
  2. Then they gained ownership of their dwellings by entering them and capturing their strongholds.
  3. Then their wealth which was in their houses.

Regarding the phrase: {and a land which you had not trodden} (وأرضا لم تطئوها):

  • It is said that this refers to the strongholds (Qilaa').
  • It is also said that it refers to the lands of the Romans and the lands of the Persians.
  • Another view is that it refers to everything that will be taken until the Day of Resurrection.

{And Allah was ever, over all things, competent} (وكان الله على كل شىء قديرا).

This statement confirms the view that what is meant by {and a land which you had not trodden} is what will be taken after the affair of Banu Qurayza. The reasoning is that when Allah granted them these lands and promised them others, He dispelled the doubt of those who might lack strong reliance on Allah. He essentially said: "Did not Allah grant you these possessions? Then He is competent over all things, so He can grant you others."

Verses 28–29

{O Prophet, say to your wives, "If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for your enjoyment and release you with a beautiful release. * But if you should desire Allah and His Messenger and the Last Abode, then indeed, Allah has prepared for those of you who do good an immense reward."}
