Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59

ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Al-Ahzab (The Confederates): Verse 59

Original Context Summary:

After mentioning that those who slander believers bear a falsehood (a sin), which serves as a prohibition against harming believers, the command shifts to the believers themselves to avoid places that invite suspicion leading to harm. This is to prevent the very harm that was previously forbidden. Since verbal abuse was specifically mentioned earlier, the text now focuses on what causes verbal harm, which is women. Speaking ill of women causes distress to both men and women, whereas speaking ill of a man primarily distresses him, and his women are less affected. In the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah), free women and slave women used to go out unveiled, followed by adulterers, leading to suspicion. Therefore, Allah commanded the free women to wear the outer garment (Jilbab).

Translation of the Verse Segment:

**{ذالك أدنى أن يعرفن فلا يؤذين}** **"That is nearer to their being recognized, so they will not be harassed."**

Exegesis (Tafsir):

It is said that "being recognized" means they are recognized as free women, so they will not be followed [by ill-intentioned men].

Alternatively, it can be said that the meaning is that they are recognized as women who do not commit fornication. This is because one who covers her face—even though it is not considered 'awrah (parts that must be covered)—it is not expected that she would uncover her private parts. Thus, they are recognized as women who are modest and cannot be solicited for illicit sex.

**{وكان الله غفورا رحيما}** **"And Allah has ever been Forgiving and Merciful."**

He forgives you for what has passed by His Mercy, and He rewards you for what you do, being compassionate towards you.

Al-Ahzab (The Confederates): Verse 60

Original Text:

**! 7 < { لئن لم ms7336 ينته المنافقون والذين فى قلوبهم مرض والمرجفون فى المدينة لنغرينك بهم ثم لا يجاورونك فيهآ إلا قليلا } . > 7 !**

Translation of the Verse:

**{لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْمُرْجِفُونَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَ بِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَا يُجَاوِرُونَكَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا}** **"If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease, and those who spread alarm in Medina, do not desist, We will surely incite you against them, then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a short while."**
