Verse range: 35:25
... and if they deny you, then indeed...
This means: You came to them with clear proofs (al-bayyināt) and the Book, yet they denied you and harmed you. Others before you also came to them with similar things, and they did to those messengers what they did to you, and they patiently endured what they were accused of.
Similarly, We hold them accountable: those messengers before you were only known to be messengers through clear miracles (al-muʿjizāt al-bayyināt). We have given Muhammad (peace be upon him) the clear proofs, the Scriptures (al-zubur), and the illuminating Book.
We have given all of these to Muhammad, so he is a messenger like the messengers, and it is incumbent upon them to accept him, just as it was incumbent upon them to accept Moses and Jesus, peace be upon them all. This serves as confirmation directed towards the People of the Book.
Know that the Almighty mentioned three things:
Thus, the messengers establish their prophethood with clear proofs. If they are of a higher rank, then with scriptures (al-zubur). If they are of an even higher rank, then with the Book. The Prophet (Muhammad) was given all of these, making him the most noble of all messengers because his Book is the most complete and perfect of all books.
{Then I seized those who disbelieved, and how [terrible] was My penalty!} (7)
