Tafsir of Fatir 35:36

Surah Fatir (35): Verse 36

Then the Almighty said: {And those who disbelieve, for them is the Fire of Hell} (35:36).

This is connected (as a contrast) to the preceding verse: {Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah} (35:29). The verses in between relate to those who recite the Book of Allah, as we have previously explained.

Regarding the phrase {Gardens of Eden they will enter} (35:30), we mentioned that according to one opinion, this refers back to {those who recite the Book of Allah}.

Then the Almighty said: {It will not be decreed for them so they die} (35:36). This means they will not find relief through death; rather, the torment is perpetual.

And the Almighty’s saying: {Nor will the torment be lightened for them}. {Thus do We recompense every ungrateful disbeliever} (35:36).

There are subtle points (wisdoms) in this:

1. The Nature of Torment: Torment in this world, if prolonged, eventually causes death. If it does not cause death, the body becomes accustomed to it, leading to a deep-seated, corrupted disposition where the afflicted person might not feel it as intensely. The torment of the Fire of the Hereafter is not like the torment of this world. Either it annihilates (which it does not do, as they remain alive to suffer) or the body becomes accustomed to it (which it does not). Instead, it remains severe at every moment, and the afflicted remains perpetually suffering.

2. Perfect Order: This arrangement follows the best possible order. The torment is continuous and never abates. It is not cut off even by the strongest cause—death—so much so that they wish for death but are not granted it, just as the Almighty said: {And they will cry out, "O Malik! Let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Indeed, you shall remain [here]"} (Az-Zukhruf 43:77).

3. Contrast in Recompense: Concerning those being punished, it was sufficient to state that their torment would not be lessened, and the verse did not mention increasing their punishment. However, concerning those receiving reward, an increase was mentioned through the phrase: {and He will increase them of His bounty} (35:30).

After establishing that their torment will not be lightened...

{And they will cry out therein, "Our Lord, remove us [to a place where] we can do righteous deeds other than what we used to do." Did We not grant you a life long enough for whoever would remember to remember? And there came to you the warner. So taste [the punishment]; for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.} (35:37)
