Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 17

And nothing is incumbent upon us except to convey [the message] clearly.

Exegesis (Tafsir al-Razi):

This phrase serves as a consolation for their own souls (the Messengers), meaning: "We have fulfilled our obligation regarding what was required of us."

It also acts as an encouragement for reflection (on the part of the disbelievers).

  • When they said, "Nothing is incumbent upon us except clear conveyance" (ما علينا إلا البلاغ), this statement should compel them to contemplate their own situation.
  • This is because the Messengers sought no reward (أجراً) nor did they aim for leadership (رياسة). Their sole concern was conveying the message (التبليغ) and remembrance (الذكر).
  • This fact alone should prompt a rational person to reflect.

The term "clear" (المبين) admits of several interpretations:

  1. Clear conveyance of the Truth over falsehood: That is, distinguishing the truth from falsehood through miracles (المعجزة) and definitive proof (البرهان).
  2. Clear conveyance revealing what We have sent to everyone: Meaning, it is not sufficient to convey the message to just one or two individuals.
  3. Clear conveyance revealing the Truth by all possible means: Once this is fully accomplished and they still refuse to accept, then destruction (الهلاك) is warranted.

Verse 17:

**They said, "Indeed, we take you as an evil omen from you. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will touch you from us a painful punishment."**
