Surah Ya seen 36:27

ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ ﳒ

Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."

Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 27

{بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي} (Because my Lord has forgiven me)

Regarding the Almighty's saying, {بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي} (Because my Lord has forgiven me), there are several possibilities for the word (ما):

  1. Interrogative (istifhāmiyyah): It is as if he meant: "Oh, I wish my people knew what my Lord has forgiven me for, so they would occupy themselves with that." This view is weak. If this were the case, it would have been better for the alif (the long vowel marker) in to be omitted, as one says bima (بِمَ) or fīma (فِيمَ) or ʿamma (عَمَّ).
  2. Relative (khabariyyah): It is as if he meant: "Oh, I wish my people knew that which my Lord has forgiven me for."
  3. Verbal Noun (maṣdariyyah): It is as if he meant: "Oh, I wish my people knew about the forgiveness of my Lord for me."

The latter two interpretations (Relative and Verbal Noun) are the preferred ones.


{وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ} (And made me among those honored)

We have previously mentioned that faith (īmān) and righteous deeds (al-ʿamal al-ṣāliḥ) necessitate two outcomes: forgiveness (al-maghfirah) and honor (al-ikrām), just as in the verse: {الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ} (Those who believe and do righteous deeds—for them is forgiveness and noble provision) [Saba: 4].

This man (Habib the carpenter) was among the believing and righteous people. Honor (al-ikram) is the opposite of humiliation (al-mahānah). Humiliation stems from neediness, while honor comes from self-sufficiency (al-istighnāʾ). Thus, Allah makes the righteous person independent of everyone else and satisfies all his needs through Himself.


Then, after clarifying his own state, the Almighty contrasted it with the state of those who remained behind and opposed him from his people, saying:

{وَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى قَوْمِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ جُنْدٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَمَا كُنَّا مُنْزِلِينَ} (And We did not send down upon his people after him any army from the heaven, nor were We about to send [any down].)
