Tafsir of Ya seen 36:46

Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 46

This verse is connected to the preceding statement: {Indeed, they denied the truth when it came to them, so the news of what they used to mock will soon reach them} (Ya-Sin: 30).

{And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away from it.}

This means: When the Messengers came to them, they denied them. When the signs were brought, they turned away from them and paid no attention to them.

Regarding the preceding verses: {Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them} up to {that you may receive mercy} (Ya-Sin: 31-45), there is an implied context: "They turned away."

It is said that their turning away is not limited to that [specific instance], but rather they turn away from every sign.

Alternatively, it can mean: When they are told to fear (God/the consequences), they demand signs, such as the sending down of an angel, etc. Then, {And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away from it.}

In this interpretation, the word {كانوا} (they were) is an emphasis, meaning: "They do not turn away from it." That is, the signs do not benefit those who have already disbelieved in some part; it becomes easy for them to disbelieve in all of it.

{And when it is said to them, "Spend from what Allah has provided for you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Shall we feed those whom Allah could have fed, if He had willed? You are not but in clear error."}
