Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 7
Then the Almighty said: {Indeed, the Word has been justly decreed against most of them, so they do not believe.}
After clarifying that the sending (of the Prophet) or the revelation is for warning, He indicated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not responsible for guidance that necessitates belief; rather, his duty is only to warn. And indeed, many among those warned will not believe.
Regarding the Almighty's saying: {Indeed, the Word has been justly decreed}, there are several interpretations:
- The Famous View: The intended "Word" is the saying of the Almighty: {I will surely fill Hell with you and those who follow you} (referring to the disbelievers).
- Foreknowledge: It means that it was already established in His knowledge that some will believe and some will not. Thus, He decreed against some that they will not believe, and against others that they will believe. {The Word has been justly decreed} means it has come into existence and been established such that it cannot be changed.
- The Word of Truth: It means the Word that God proclaimed through the tongues of the Messengers concerning Tawhid (monotheism) and other matters, supported by proof. Most of them do not believe after this, because one who pauses to listen to the evidence during a period of consideration might be expected to believe once the proof becomes clear. If they persist and confirm their disbelief even after the Word is established, it becomes clear that most of them will not believe, either because the time for hoping for their belief has passed, or because if they require something clearer than proof, it would be direct sight (seeing the Unseen). But belief is of no benefit upon direct sight.
- In this interpretation, the phrase {against most of them} means that those who have not received the call and the proof are few. Therefore, the decree applies to the majority who did not manifest belief. This interpretation is clear regarding the first two views as well, since most disbelievers died upon disbelief and did not believe.
- A Related View: It could mean that the decree of immediate punishment has been justly decreed against most of them, and so they do not believe. This is close to the first interpretation.
Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 8
{Indeed, We have placed shackles on their necks, and they reach up to their chins, so they are with their heads raised.}
Then the Almighty said: {Indeed, We have placed shackles on their necks, and they reach up to their chins, so they are with their heads raised.}
