This points to the explanation of the extent and culmination of their misguidance. It was incumbent upon them to worship Allāh in gratitude for His bounties, yet they abandoned this and turned to worshipping those who can neither harm nor benefit. They expected support from these idols, even though they themselves are the ones who support them, as Allāh said concerning them: **{Burn him and support your gods}** (Al-Anbiyā’: 68). In reality, these idols are neither supporters nor are they supported.

**{They are unable to support them, and they [the idols] are an army mustered for them [the idolaters]}** (36:75)
