Surah Ya-Sin (36): Verse 75

Original Text Segment:

لا يستطيعون نصرهم . . . . .

Translation & Exegesis (Tafsir):

This verse points toward the Resurrection after establishing the Oneness of God (Tawhid).

This is similar to His saying:

  • "Indeed, you and that which you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell. You will all enter it." (Al-Anbiya: 98)
  • And His saying: "Gather those who wronged, and their spouses and what they used to worship besides Allah, and lead them to the path of Hellfire." (As-Saffat: 22-23)
  • And His saying: "Those will be in torment." (Saba: 38)

This statement—"they cannot help them"—admits of two meanings:

  1. That the worshippers will be an army/contingent for those they took as gods, as previously mentioned.
  2. That the idols themselves will be an army/contingent for the worshippers.

If we take the second meaning, there is a subtle point: Since God stated, "they cannot help them," He reinforced this by saying they cannot help them even when they are assembled as their army and present to aid them.

This emphasizes the utmost inability, because whoever is prepared, gathered, and yet still incapable of providing support is in the extreme state of weakness, unlike one who was not prepared or whose supporters were not assembled.

Original Text Segment:
