And do not weaken in pursuit of the enemy. If you should be suffering - so are they suffering as you are suffering, but you expect from Allah that which they expect not. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

Al-Nisa (4:104) And do not lose heart...

It is known that after mentioning some rulings that the warrior needs to know, the Almighty returned once more to encourage Jihad, saying: {And do not lose heart} (i.e., do not become weak or hesitant) {in seeking out the enemy} (i.e., in pursuing the disbelievers in battle).

Then, He presented the proof for that: If the fear of pain did not prevent them [the disbelievers] from fighting you, how then has it become a barrier for you from fighting them?

Furthermore, He reinforced the argument, clarifying that the believers are more deserving of patience in fighting than the polytheists. This is because the believers affirm the reward and punishment, and the Resurrection and Reinstatement, whereas the polytheists do not affirm these things. If they [the polytheists], despite their denial of the Resurrection and Reinstatement, find the resolve for fighting, then you, O believers, who affirm that you have a great reward for this Jihad and a severe punishment for abandoning it, are more deserving of being diligent in this Jihad. This is what is meant by the Almighty’s saying: {And you hope from Allah what they do not hope for}.

Another interpretation for this hope is what Allah promised them in His saying: {It is He Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it victorious over all religions} (At-Tawbah: 33, Al-Fath: 28, As-Saff: 9), and in His saying: {Sufficient for you is Allah, O Prophet, and for those believers who follow you} (Al-Anfal: 64).

There is a third perspective: You worship the All-Knowing, All-Powerful, All-Hearing, All-Seeing God, so it is appropriate for you to hope for His reward. As for the polytheists, they worship idols, which are inanimate objects, so it is not appropriate for them to hope for a reward from those idols or fear punishment from them.

Al-A'raj recited: {If you suffer, then surely they suffer as you suffer} with an Fath (opening vowel) on the Hamza, meaning: "Do not lose heart because you suffer," and the statement {for surely they suffer as you suffer} serves as the reason (ta'leel).

Then He said: {And Allah is Ever Knowing, Wise}. This means He does not burden you with anything, nor command you or forbid you, except with what He knows to be the cause of your well-being in your religion and your worldly life.

{Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, that you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you. And never be an advocate for the treacherous. * And seek forgiveness from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Ever Forgiving, Merciful.} (4:105-106)
