Surah An-Nisa' 4:130

ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ

But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each [of them] from His abundance. And ever is Allah Encompassing and Wise.

Surah An-Nisa (4): Verse 130

{And if they separate, Allah will enrich both from His bounty.}


Then the Almighty said: {And if they separate, Allah will enrich both from His bounty.}

Know that when the Almighty mentioned the permissibility of reconciliation if they desired it, and if they opted for separation, then Allah, the Glorified, clarified its permissibility through this verse as well. He promised them that He would enrich each one of them after the divorce, making them independent of their spouse.

Alternatively, the meaning could be that Allah will enrich each one of them with a spouse better than their first, and they will live a more comfortable life than their previous one.


Then He said: {And Allah is All-Encompassing, Wise.}

The meaning is that since the Almighty promised to enrich each of them from His bounty, He described Himself as being Wāsiʿ (All-Encompassing/Bountiful).

The description of Allah, the Exalted, as Wāsiʿ is justified because He is vast in provision, vast in grace, vast in mercy, vast in power, and vast in knowledge. If the Almighty had specified "Vast in X," the description would have been restricted to that specific attribute. However, by stating Al-Wāsiʿ without attributing it to a specific thing, it indicates that He is vast in all perfections.

The rational proof for this is that existence is either necessary in itself (wājib li-dhātihi) or contingent in itself (mumkin li-dhātihi). The Necessary Existent in itself is One, and that is Allah, the Glorified. Everything else is contingent in itself and only exists through the creation of the Necessary Existent (Allah). Given this, it necessitates that He is vast in knowledge, power, wisdom, mercy, grace, generosity, and liberality.

Regarding His statement {Wise} (Ḥakīm):

  • Ibn Abbas said it means concerning what He has judged and advised.
  • Al-Kalbī said it means concerning what He has judged regarding the husband—either retaining [the wife] with kindness or releasing her with excellence.

{And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you, and you [O Muslims] as well, to fear Allah. And if you disbelieve—then indeed, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And Allah is ever Free of need and Praiseworthy.}

{And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.}

{If He wills, O people, He can remove you and bring forth others. And Allah is ever capable of that.}

{Whoever desires the reward of this world—then with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.}
