Tafsir
Verse range: 4:174-175
And know that when the Almighty established the proof against all groups—the hypocrites, the disbelievers, the Jews, and the Christians—and responded to all their doubts, He generalized the address. He called upon all people to acknowledge the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) by saying:
{A protector! O mankind, there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord...}
The Proof (Burhan) is Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was named a Proof because his mission is to establish the proof for the verification of truth and the invalidation of falsehood.
The Manifest Light (Nur al-Mubin) is the Qur'an. It was named Light because it is the means by which the light of faith enters the heart.
After establishing that Muhammad is the Messenger and the Qur'an is the true Book for all creation, He commanded them to adhere to the Law (Shari'ah) of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and promised them a reward for it, saying:
{...So as for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him...}
Believing in Allah means believing in His Essence, Attributes, Actions, Rulings, and Names. Holding fast to Him (I'tisam bihi) means seeking His support to keep them firm upon faith, protect them from the temptations of Satan, admit them into His Mercy and Grace, and guide them to Him on the Straight Path.
He promised three things: Mercy, Grace, and Guidance.
Ibn Abbas said:
I say: The Mercy and Grace refer to the benefits and honors found in Paradise. As for Guidance, it refers to the felicities attained through the manifestation of the lights of the Realm of Holiness and Majesty within human souls. This is the spiritual happiness. Its mention was delayed after the first two parts to indicate that spiritual delight is nobler than physical pleasures.
