Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?
Tafsir
Verse range: 47:27
Know that when Allah Almighty said: {And Allah knows their secrets} (Muhammad: 26), He then said:
It is as if He is saying: Even if they conceal their secrets, and even if they choose fighting because of the striking and piercing involved—which yields benefit in both outcomes (if they win, they gain wealth immediately and reward later; if they are defeated, they gain martyrdom and happiness)—then what will their state be when their faces and backs are struck?
There is a subtlety here: In immediate combat, if one engages in a duel, the opponent might be defeated, thus saving his face and back. If the opponent is not defeated, striking the face requires steadfastness; if one flees, the face is saved, but the back is struck. If one does not flee, the back is struck.
However, on the Day of Death, there is no victory or escape. Both the face and the back will be struck and pierced. So, how can they guard against harm and choose the greater torment?
