Surah Muhammad (47): Verse 34

Original Arabic Segment:

إن الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله وشاقوا الرسول من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى لن يضروا الله شيئا وسيحبط أعمالهم

Translation:

Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [others] from the way of Allah and oppose the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to them, they will never harm Allah in the least, and He will nullify their deeds.

Scholarly Commentary (Based on Al-Razi's style):

This verse establishes two crucial points regarding the disbelievers:

  1. Their Inability to Harm Allah: They will never harm Allah in the slightest degree (لن يضروا الله شيئا). This is because His essence and dominion are beyond their reach. Their disbelief only harms themselves.
  1. The Nullification of Their Deeds: Allah will certainly nullify their deeds (وسيحبط أعمالهم). This nullification applies even if those deeds appear outwardly good (like charity or maintaining kinship), because they lack the foundation of true faith (الإيمان).

Connecting to the Subsequent Verse (Verse 34 continuation/Verse 35):

The preceding discussion aims to clarify that Allah does not forgive Shirk (polytheism), but He may forgive what is less than that according to His Will, so that no one might assume:

"Even though their deeds are invalidated, the grace of Allah remains, and He will forgive them by His favor, even if He does not forgive them because of their deeds."

Verse 35:

{ إنا كل شىء خلقناه بقدر }

Translation:

Indeed, We have created everything according to a measure (or decree).
