Al-Ma'idah (5:104)
And when it is said to them...
The meaning is known, and it is a refutation of the people of blind imitation (taqlid). We have fully discussed this matter in many places.
Know that the waw (و) in the phrase {And when it is said to them} (وإذا قيل لهم) is the waw al-hal (the circumstantial waw), preceded by the interrogative hamza of denial. The implied meaning is: "Do they think that [this is the case], even if their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided?"
Know that following (i.e., imitation/adherence) is only permissible for one who is knowledgeable and guided. One is only considered knowledgeable and guided if their statement is based on proof and evidence. If it is not so, then they are not knowledgeable and guided, and therefore, it is not permissible to follow them.
Quranic Verses (5:105-106)
**O you who have believed, upon you is [the responsibility for] yourselves. Harm will not come to you from those who have gone astray when you are guided. To Allah is your return all of you, and He will inform you about what you used to do.**
**O you who have believed, when death approaches one of you and [he is] making a will, let there be [as witnesses] two just men from among you or two others from outside your group if you are traveling throughout the land and the calamity of death befalls you. Detain them both after the prayer, and if you doubt, let them both swear by Allah, "We will not sell this [oath] for a price, even if he were a near relative, and we will not conceal the testimony of Allah. Indeed, we would then be among the sinful."**
