Tafsir of Al-Ma'idah 5:108

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:108

ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ ﳋ ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ ﳒ ﳓ ﳔ ﳕ ﳖ ﳗ ﳘ

That is more likely that they will give testimony according to its [true] objective, or [at least] they would fear that [other] oaths might be taken after their oaths. And fear Allah and listen; and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread): Verse 108

That is nearer to their bringing the testimony in its proper manner, or fearing that oaths will be returned after their oaths.

The meaning is that the ruling we have mentioned, and the path we have legislated, is closer to them either:

  1. Bringing the testimony in its proper manner (truthfully).
  2. Or, bringing the testimony not in its proper manner, but fearing that their oaths will be returned upon the heirs after their own oaths. This fear is because their falsehood will become apparent, and they will be exposed among the people.

And He said, Exhort Allah (in piety) and listen. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

The meaning is: Be pious toward Allah so that you do not betray trusts. And listen to the admonitions of Allah, meaning act upon them and obey Allah therein. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

This is a threat and a warning for those who oppose Allah's ruling and His commands.

This is the interpretation of this verse, concerning which the exegetes agree that it is extremely difficult in terms of grammar, structure, and ruling. Al-Wahidi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in Al-Basit that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This verse contains the most perplexing of the rulings in this Surah."

The ruling mentioned in this verse has been abrogated according to most jurists. And Allah knows best the secrets of His speech.

Verse 109

The Day Allah will gather the Messengers and say, "What was the response you received?" They will say, "We have no knowledge. Indeed, it is You who is the All-Knower of the unseen."
