Al-Ma'idah (5:65) - "And if the People of the Scripture had believed and feared Allah..."

And know that when the Almighty exaggerated the condemnation of them and criticized their methodology, He clarified that if they had believed and been pious, they would have found the felicities of both the Hereafter and this world.

As for the felicities of the Hereafter, they are confined to two types:

  1. The removal of punishment. This is what is meant by His saying: {We would have covered over their sins} (referring to the preceding context, though not explicitly quoted here).
  2. The attainment of reward. This is what is meant by His saying: {and admitted them into Gardens of Bliss}.

If it is asked: Belief alone is an independent cause for the expiation of sins and the granting of good deeds, so why was the condition of piety (Taqwa) joined to it?

We reply: What is intended is that they should come with belief for the purpose of piety and obedience, not for some other worldly purpose, such as what the hypocrites do.

Then the Almighty said:

**{And if they had established the Torah and the Gospel and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would have eaten from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate nation, but many of them—evil is what they do.}** (5:65)
