Tafsir of Al-Ma'idah 5:72

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:72

ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:72)

Allah's Statement:

{ Laqad kafar allatheena qaaloo inna Allaha huwa al-Maseehu ibnu Maryam } Indeed, those who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary," have disbelieved.

Commentary: When the Almighty concluded the discourse with the Jews, He now begins addressing the Christians. He recounts that a faction among them said: "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary." This is the doctrine of the Jacobites (Ya'qubiyyah), who assert that Mary gave birth to a god. Perhaps the meaning of this doctrine is that they believe Allah incarnated within the essence of Jesus and united with his essence.

Then, the Almighty recounts what the Messiah (Jesus) said:

{ **Waqala al-Maseehu yaa Baneee Israa'eela i'budoo Allaha rabbee warabbakum** } *And the Messiah said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord."*

This statement serves as a clear indication of the decisive proof against the falsehood of the Christians' claim. This is because the Messiah (peace be upon him) did not differentiate between himself and others, as the signs of createdness (huduth) were evident upon him.

Allah's Statement:

{ Innahu man yushrik billahi faqad harrama Allahu 'alayhi al-jannata wama'waahu an-naar } Indeed, whoever associates partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his refuge will be the Fire.

Commentary: The meaning of this is apparent. Our scholars (Ashabuna) use this verse as evidence that the punishment of sinful believers (Fussaq) will not be eternal. They argue that since Allah made the greatest form of threat and warning against polytheists (Mushrikeen) the prohibition of Paradise and their destination being the Fire, and that they will have no helper nor intercessor, if the state of sinful believers were the same, then the warning against polytheism would lose its significance.

Allah's Statement:

{ Laqad kafar allatheena qaaloo inna Allaha thalathu thalathatin } Indeed, those who say, "Allah is the third of three," have disbelieved.

Commentary: This refers to the doctrine of the Trinity.

Allah's Statement:

{ Wama min ilaahin illa ilaahun wahid } And there is no deity except one God.

Commentary: This affirms absolute monotheism (Tawhid).

Allah's Statement:

{ Wa in lam yantahoo 'amma yaqooloona layamassanna allatheena kafaroo minhum 'athaabun aleem } And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely touch those who disbelieve among them a painful punishment.

Commentary: If they do not cease from what they utter, a painful punishment will afflict the disbelievers among them.
