Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:92

ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ

And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and beware. And if you turn away - then know that upon Our Messenger is only [the responsibility for] clear notification.

Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread): Verse 92

{And obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and beware...}

The apparent meaning is: "And obey Allah, and obey the Messenger concerning what was previously mentioned regarding the command to abstain from wine and gambling."

And His saying: {And beware} means beware of opposing these commands.

The eighth point is His saying:

{But if you turn away, then know that upon Our Messenger is only the clear conveyance [of the message].}

This is a great threat and a severe warning for those who oppose this ruling and turn away from the judgment of Allah. It means that if you turn away, the proof has been established against you, and the Messenger has fulfilled his duty of conveying the message, offering excuses, and giving warnings. As for what lies beyond that—the punishment for whoever opposes this ruling and turns away from it—that is up to Allah, the Exalted. There is no doubt that this is a severe threat. Thus, each of these eight points becomes an overwhelming proof and a dazzling argument for the prohibition of wine.

Know that whoever is just and avoids twisting the meaning will realize that this verse is an explicit text stating that everything intoxicating is forbidden. This is because when the Almighty mentioned His saying: {Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred in wine and gambling, and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from the prayer} (Al-Ma'idah: 91), He immediately followed it with: {So will you not desist?} (Al-Ma'idah: 91).

He linked the prohibition of drinking wine to the fact that wine contains these corruptions. It is known by the necessities of intellect that these corruptions only arise from wine's effect in causing intoxication. This necessitates the certainty that the reason ('illah) for the command {So will you not desist?} is the wine's effect in causing intoxication. If this is established, it is obligatory to be certain that everything intoxicating is forbidden. Whoever grasps this logical structure with their intellect and yet persists in their claim, there is no remedy for their obstinacy. And Allah knows best.

{There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they consumed [in the past] when they were righteous, and believe and do righteous deeds, then remain righteous and believe, then remain righteous and do good. And Allah loves the doers of good.}
