Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread): Verse 99

[The verse structure is preserved, with minor summarization for readability.]

And know that when the Almighty presented the warning and the encouragement in His statement:

{Indeed, Allah is severe in penalty, and indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful} (Al-Ma'idah: 98)

He followed it up with the directive in His statement:

**{What is incumbent upon the Messenger except to convey [the message]?}**

This means that he (the Prophet) was only tasked with conveying the message. Once he conveyed it, he was absolved of responsibility, and the matter remains on your side. "And I know what you reveal and what you conceal." If you disobey, then know that Allah is severe in penalty, and if you obey, then know that Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

**{Say, "The impure is not equal to the pure, even if the abundance of the impure pleases you. So fear Allah, O people of understanding, that you may be successful."}**
