| Verse (19): And the agony of death will come...
The agony of death (***sakarat al-Mawt***) means its intensity that overwhelms the intellects and stupefies the senses.
The phrase {with the truth} (bil-Haqq) is open to several interpretations:
- The first interpretation: It means Death itself, as death is the Truth (Haqq). Thus, the intensity of death brings forth (or presents) death. The preposition Bā’ (with) here implies conveyance or bringing something forth; it is said, "So-and-so came with such-and-such," meaning he brought it along.
- The second interpretation: It refers to the Religion (the truth brought by the Prophet) which is the Truth (Haqq). This truth becomes manifest at the intensity of death. Everyone, in that state, reveals their faith, but it is only accepted from those who previously believed in the Unseen (al-Ghayb). The meaning of "bringing it" (jā’a bihi) is that it reveals it, just as one says, "The religion that the Prophet (PBUH) brought," meaning he revealed it. Since the agony of death reveals this truth, it is said, "it comes with it." In this case, the preposition Bā’ might imply accompaniment (mulābasah), as in, "I came to you with broad hope and a humble heart."
The phrase {That is} (Dhālika) could be a reference to Death, or it could be a reference to the Truth.
{He turned away from the path} (Hāda ‘an aṭ-Ṭarīq) means he deviated from it.
Regarding the addressee of this statement:
- It is said that the address is directed to the Prophet (PBUH), which is considered unlikely (or inappropriate).
- It is said that the address is directed to the disbelievers, which is closer to the intended meaning.
- The strongest view is that it is a general address to the listener, as if saying: {That is what you were trying to evade} (Dhālika mā kunta minhu taḥīd), O listener.
