Surah Qaf (50): Verse 39

{فَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ} (So be patient with what they say.)

The commentators mentioned previously have interpreted this in two ways:

  1. Interpretation 1: It means, "Be patient with what they say regarding the talk of being tired from lying down (in disbelief)."
  2. Interpretation 2: It means, "Be patient with what they say, 'Indeed, this is a wondrous thing!'"

The second interpretation is closer because the preceding context mentions the command to glorify (Tasbīh), whereas the talk of the Jews and their speech has not been previously mentioned in this immediate context.

{وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ} (And glorify the praise of your Lord.)

This phrase is open to several interpretations:

  1. One interpretation: Allah commanded the Prophet (peace be upon him) to perform the ritual prayer (Salāh). This is similar to His saying: {وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ} (And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in some of the night) [Hud: 114].

The phrase {قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ} (before sunrise and before sunset) refers to the two ends of the day.

{وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَارَ السُّجُودِ} (And [part] of the night, glorify Him, and after prostration.)
