Tafsir
Verse range: 50:8
It is possible that the two commands refer back to the two previously mentioned things, which are the heaven and the earth. This interpretation suggests that the creation of the heaven is a **reflection (tabṣirah)**, and the creation of the earth is a **reminder (dhikrā)**. Evidence for this is that the adornment of the heaven is continuous and not renewed every year; thus, it is like something seen throughout time. As for the earth, it takes on its splendor every year. Therefore, the heaven serves as a reflection, and the earth as a reminder. Alternatively, it is possible that each of the two commands (reflection and reminder) is present in each of the two things (heaven and earth). Thus, the heaven is a reflection, and the earth is also a reflection. The difference between a **reflection (tabṣirah)** and a **reminder (tadhkirah)** is that the former involves signs that are **permanent** and set before the intellects, while the latter involves signs that are **renewed**, serving to remind when one becomes heedless. The phrase, **"for every repentant servant" (li-kulli 'abdin munīb)**, means one who returns to contemplation, remembrance, and consideration of the proofs.
**"And We sent down from the sky water that is blessed, and thereby We caused to grow gardens and the grain of the harvest, And tall palm trees having fruit in rows."**
