Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51): Verse 14

ذوقوا فتنتكم هذا (Taste your trial/tribulation, this is it...)

If it is said: This leads to an implied element (omission). We reply: Omission is necessary because the saying, **"Taste your trial/tribulation,"** is not connected to what precedes it except through an implied element.

It is said that the meaning of يُفْتَنُونَ (they are tried/tempted) is "they are burned." However, it is better to say its meaning is "they are exposed to the Fire, like gold is exposed to the fire for testing." The word fitnah (trial/temptation) relates to this testing. If the meaning were "they are burned," then using bi-n-nār (by the fire) or fi-n-nār (in the fire) would be more appropriate, because fitnah fundamentally means testing (al-imtihān).

As for what is said regarding testing stones (as a source of the word fitnah), that refers to the source of the trials. Here, the statement is: "Taste your trial/tribulation," and fitnah here means testing/trial.

If we take the verse {يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ} (The Day they will be tried/tested over the Fire) as something said to them, then what is the meaning of {هَٰذَا الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ} (This is that which you used to hasten)?

We say: It is possible that the intended meaning is that they used to hasten it by explicit speech, as in His saying recounting them: {رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا} (Our Lord, hasten to us our portion) and His saying: {فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا} (Then bring us what You have threatened us with). This is supported here by His saying: {يَسْأَلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الدِّينِ} (They ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"), which is a form of hastening.

It is also possible that the intended meaning is hastening through action, which is persisting in disbelief and manifesting corruption, as this hastens the punishment.

Then the Almighty said:

! 7 < { إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ } . > 7 !
