Tafsir of Ad-Dhariyat 51:21

Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51): Verse 21

And within yourselves. Then will you not see?

This points to the evidence found in the human self, similar to His saying:

"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (Fussilat: 53)

He chose the evidence of the horizons that is on the Earth because it is more apparent to those who are upon it. This is because in its extremities and peripheries, there are kinds whose enumeration is impossible.

The evidence of the self in the phrase: "And within yourselves" is general. It might be intended specifically for the believers. The address form (second person plural) is used because the knowledge a person has of what is within themselves is more complete and evident.

The Almighty's saying: "And within yourselves" can mean:

1. Within your physical selves (bodies): Just as stones are inherently hard, the word nafs (self) here might not exclusively refer to the soul that is the source of life, sensation, and movement.
2. Within your souls (nufūs): Meaning, within your very souls, through which your life exists, there are signs.

His saying: "Then will you not see?" (using the interrogative form) indicates the clarity and obviousness of these signs.

And in the heaven is your provision and that which you are promised.
