Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51): Verse 46

Original Text Segment: وقوم نوح من . . . . .

Translation & Exegesis:

And [We destroyed] the people of Noah from...

**Regarding the reading of *qawm* (people):** It has been recited with both the genitive case (*jarr*) and the accusative case (*nasb*). What is the rationale for each?
  1. The Genitive Case (Jarr): This reading is straightforward. It is in apposition (as a continuation) to what preceded, such as in the Almighty's saying:
    • "...and in 'Ad" (51:41)
    • "...and in Moses" (51:38) It is as if the structure implies: "In so-and-so is a lesson for you, and in so-and-so, and in the people of Noah."
  1. The Accusative Case (Nasb): This reading implies an omitted verb, specifically: "And We destroyed the people of Noah before." Since the preceding verses already indicated destruction, this reading is an apposition based on the implied location/object (maḥall).
    • Under this interpretation, the phrase "from before" (min qabl) carries its apparent meaning, as if the verse explicitly stated: "And We destroyed the people of Noah from before."
    • However, under the first interpretation (Genitive case), the implied meaning is: "And in the people of Noah, there is a lesson for you from before [the time of] Thamud and 'Ad and others."

Then the Almighty said:
