Exegesis (Tafsir)

There are several interpretations regarding this phrase:

  1. Praise for the Believers: It means that the one who is guided is turned away from divergent speech (falsehood) and directed toward the straight, consistent word (the Truth).
  2. Condemnation: It means that the one who is turned away is diverted from the Messenger (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him).
  3. Denial of Resurrection: It means that the one who is turned away is diverted from affirming the Resurrection.
  4. Rejection of the Qur'an: It means that the one who is turned away is diverted from the Qur'an.

Variant Readings:

  • It has been read as يُؤْفَنُ (yu'fanu) from the root A-F-N (أفن), meaning "deprived" or "forbidden."
  • It has also been read as يُؤْفَكُ (yu'faku) from the root A-F-K (أفك), meaning "deceived" or "lied to."

Then, the Almighty said:

! 7 < { قُتِلَ الْخَرَّاصُونَ } . > 7 !
