Surah At-Tur (The Mount): Verse 17

إن المتقين في جنات ونعيم

Translation:

Indeed, the righteous (Al-Muttaqūn) will be in Gardens (Jannāt) and Bliss (Na'īm).

Exegesis (Tafsir based on Al-Razi's style):

This verse follows the pattern common in the Qur'an of presenting the state of the believer immediately after describing the state of the disbeliever.

The mention of the reward (Paradise) immediately following the mention of the punishment (Hellfire) completes the purpose of both warning (Tahrīb) and encouragement (Targhīb).

We have previously explained the meaning of Al-Muttaqūn (the righteous/pious) in several places.

Although Paradise itself is the place of joy, the guard (nāṭūr) stationed in a beautiful orchard (which is the utmost in pleasantness) is not necessarily enjoying the delights himself. Therefore, the phrase {and Bliss} (wa na'īm) signifies that they will be truly delighting themselves within it, unlike the guard who is merely present in the pleasant place but not partaking in the enjoyment, like an observer rather than a participant.

Surah At-Tur (The Mount): Verse 18

فاكهين بمآ ءاتاهم ربهم ووقاهم ربهم عذاب الجحيم

Translation:

Enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord has protected them from the punishment of the Hellfire.

Exegesis (Tafsir based on Al-Razi's style):

{Enjoying what their Lord has given them} (Fākihīna bimā ātāhum Rabbuhum): This emphasizes their state of pleasure and satisfaction derived from the gifts bestowed upon them by their Lord.

{and their Lord has protected them from the punishment of the Hellfire} (wa waqāhum Rabbuhum 'adhāb al-Jaḥīm): This highlights the dual nature of their reward: receiving the good (Paradise and its delights) and being saved from the evil (the torment of Hell). This protection is a grace from God, securing them against the very fate they were warned about.
