Al-Najm (The Star): (10) So He revealed to His Servant...

There are two interpretations regarding the meaning of "He revealed to His servant" (فَأَوْحَى إِلَى عَبْدِهِ):

  1. Interpretation 1: God revealed to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) what He revealed to Gabriel (عليه السلام). This means God spoke to him, either by creating in him an essential, necessary knowledge (علماً ضرورياً) of the revelation, or by communicating the revelation directly.
  1. Interpretation 2: God revealed to Gabriel what was to be conveyed to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), which is the proof (دليله) by which he would know that it was revelation. Based on this, it can be argued that the ما (what) is a masdar (verbal noun), meaning: "So He revealed to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) the revelation (الإيحاء)," which signifies the knowledge of the revelation itself. This distinction is made to differentiate between the Angel and the Jinn.
