Al-Najm (The Star): (15) 'Indahā Jannatu al-Ma'wā (With it is the Garden of Abode)

There is a difference of opinion regarding Jannat al-Ma'wā (the Garden of Abode):

  1. Opinion 1: Some say it is the very Garden promised to the pious. In this case, the possessive structure (idāfa) is like the verse: {Dār al-Muqāmah} (The Abode of Permanence) (Fatir: 35).
  2. Opinion 2: It is another Garden where the souls of the martyrs reside.
  3. Opinion 3: It is a Garden specifically for the angels.

There is also a variant reading (qirā’a): {Jinnah} (with a hā’ instead of a tā’ marbūṭa), derived from janna (to cover/envelop), as in janna al-layl (the night enveloped).

If this reading is adopted, the pronoun in the phrase {al-Muntahā 'indahā} (the utmost limit is with it) could refer back to the nuzūl (descent/revelation), meaning: "At the descent, there is the Garden of Abode for Muhammad." However, the apparent and more correct view is that the pronoun refers back to the Sidrat al-Muntahā (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary).

It is reported that 'Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) initially rejected this variant reading, though other reports suggest she permitted it.

{16} *Idh yaghashshā al-Sidrata mā yaghashshā* (When that which covers covers the Lote Tree)
