Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon): Verse 30

"And how [severe] was My punishment and My warning."

This has been previously explained and interpreted. However, this verse has been mentioned in three places: 1. In the account of Noah, it is mentioned *after* the explanation of the punishment. 2. It is mentioned here (in Surah Al-Qamar) *before* the explanation of the punishment. 3. It is mentioned in the account of 'Ad (the people of Hud) both *before* and *after* the explanation of the punishment. Where it is mentioned *before* the explanation of the punishment, it is used for emphasis (tawkid), similar to saying, "I struck so-and-so," meaning, "I struck him, and what a striking it was!" Or, "I struck him, and how I struck him," meaning, "I struck him severely." In the account of 'Ad, it is mentioned twice for both emphasis and inquiry (istifhām), the reason for which we have already mentioned. In the account of Noah, the structure used implies **magnification** (taʿẓīm) because the punishment of Noah's people was a great, universal matter: the Flood that encompassed the entire world. This is unlike the punishment of the people of Hud, which was specific only to them.

[Then Almighty God said]:

**{Indeed, We sent against them a single blast, and they became like the dry kindling of a pen-maker.}** (Qur'an 54:30)
