And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance
Tafsir
Verse range: 55:7
The raising of the heaven is known in meaning, and its grammatical case (accusative/ منصوب) is known in pronunciation, as it is governed by a verb that clarifies it.
This refers to His saying: {He raised it} (referring to the heaven). It is as if the Almighty said: "He raised the heaven."
It has also been recited with the nominative case ({وَالسَّمَاءُ} - Wa-s-samā’u) as a subject (Mubtada') and is coordinated with the initial clause, which is His saying: {The sun and the moon} (Ar-Rahman: 5).
As for {and set up the Balance} (wa waḍa‘a al-mīzān), it is an indication of justice. There is a subtlety here: the Almighty first mentioned knowledge, then mentioned what contains the noblest kind of knowledge, which is the Qur'an. Then, He mentioned justice and mentioned the most specific aspect of it, which is the Balance (Mīzān). This is like His saying: {And We sent down with them the Book and the Balance} (Al-Hadid: 25), so that people may act according to the Book and do with the Balance what the Book commands them to do.
Thus, His saying {He taught the Qur'an} and {and set up the Balance} is similar to {We sent down with them the Book and the Balance}.
If one asks: Knowledge is undoubtedly a great blessing. But what is the great blessing contained in the Balance that warrants its mention among the bounties (Alā’)?
We reply: Souls abhor being cheated (ghabn); no one is content to be overcome by another, even in a trivial matter, and they view it as an insult, so they will not concede it to their opponent due to being overpowered. No one accepts that their opponent should overcome them. Therefore, were it not for clarification and equality (tasāwī), Satan would sow hatred among people, just as happens in ignorance, loss of reason, or intoxication.
Just as intellect and knowledge are the means for the preservation and maintenance of the world, justice in wisdom is also a means. The most specific of these means is the Balance. It is a complete blessing, and its blessing is not apparent because of its abundance and ease of access, like air and water, whose virtue is only recognized upon their loss.
Then the Almighty said:
