Tafsir
Verse range: 58:10
His saying, the Exalted: {Indeed, the secret conversation is from Satan, to grieve those who have believed}
The definite article al- (the) in the word {al-Najwā} (the secret conversation) cannot imply absolute generality (Istighrāq). This is because some secret conversations originate from God and are for God's sake. Rather, the intended meaning here is the previously mentioned type: the secret conversation involving sin and aggression.
The meaning is that Satan incites them to engage in that secret conversation which causes grief to the believers. This happens because when the believers see them conferring secretly, they think: "We see them only because news has reached them about their relatives and brethren who went out on military expeditions—that they have been killed or defeated." This thought enters their hearts, and they become saddened by it.
{And it will not harm them at all except by the permission of Allah.}
There are two interpretations regarding this phrase:
Regarding {except by the permission of Allah}:
{And upon Allah let the believers rely.}
Indeed, whoever relies upon Him will not have his hope disappointed, nor will his effort be rendered void.
{O you who have believed, when it is said to you, "Make space in the assemblies," then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when it is said, "Arise," then arise. Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, in degrees. And Allah, with what you do, is Acquainted.}
