Al-Mujadilah (The Pleading Woman): Verse 19

{استحوذ عليهم الشيطان . . . . .}

Al-Zajjaj said: *Istahwadha* (استحوذ) in the language means to take complete control (*istawla*). It is said, "*Hawaztu al-ibil*" (حاوزت الإبل) and "*Hadhaytuha*" (حذتها) when you have taken control of the camels and gathered them. Al-Mubarrid said: *Istahwadha 'ala al-shay'* (استحوذ على الشيء) means he seized it and encompassed it. 'A'ishah said regarding 'Umar: "He was *ahwadhiyyun*" (أحوذيا), meaning one who manages and controls affairs. This is one of the forms that follows the original pattern, similar to *istastwaba* (استصوب) and *istanawqa* (استنوق). This means: Satan has taken possession of them and gained complete control over them.

{فأنساهم ذكر الله أولئك حزب الشيطان ألا إن حزب الشيطان هم الخاسرون}

The Qadi (Judge) used this verse as proof regarding the creation of actions in two ways: 1. If that forgetfulness (*nisyan*) occurred by the creation of Allah, then attributing it to Satan would be a lie. 2. If that occurred by the creation of Allah, then they would be like the believers, being the party of Allah, not the party of Satan.

Then the Almighty said:

{إن الذين يحآدون الله ورسوله أولائك فى الا ذلين * كتب الله لاغلبن أنا ورسلىإن الله قوى عزيز}

**{Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—those will be among the most humiliated. Allah has decreed: "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Mighty.}**
