Tafsir of Al-Hashr 59:11

Surah Al-Hashr 59:11

ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ

Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars.

Al-Hashr (The Banishment): Verse 11

Al-Muqatilan (the two fighters) said: They refer to 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy, 'Abdullah ibn Nabatil, and Rifa'ah ibn Zayd. They were from the Ansar, but they practiced hypocrisy. They said to their brethren (the Jews):

This brotherhood (أخوة) can be understood in several ways:

  1. Brotherhood in Disbelief: Because the Jews and the hypocrites shared a general disbelief in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  2. Brotherhood due to Friendship and Alliance: Based on mutual affection, support, and cooperation.
  3. Brotherhood due to Shared Enmity: Because they were united in their hostility toward Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Then, the Almighty informed us about what they said to the Jews:

**{If you are driven out, we will surely leave with you, and we will never obey anyone against you...}**

This means: "If you are expelled from Medina, we will leave with you, and we will never obey anyone concerning your abandonment or betrayal."

They also promised them victory, saying:

**{...and if you are fought, we will surely help you.}**

Then, the Almighty testified to the falsehood of their statement, saying:

**{And Allah bears witness that they are liars.}**

After testifying to their lying in a general manner, the Almighty followed it up with the details:

**{If they are driven out, they will not go out with them; and if they are fought, they will not help them; and even if they were to help them, they would surely turn their backs (flee), and then they would not be helped.}**
