Verse range: 59:12
Know that the Almighty is fully aware of all infinite pieces of knowledge. He knows all existing things across the three time periods (past, present, future), and all non-existent things across those same three periods. Furthermore, He knows, concerning each of these six aspects, how things would have been had they occurred differently from what actually happened.
Here, the Almighty informs us that if these Jews (Banu Nadir) were expelled, these hypocrites would not leave with them. This indeed occurred, for when Banu Nadir were expelled, the hypocrites did not depart with them, nor did they fight to support them.
As for His statement, {And if they were to help them} [59:12b], the implication is similar to what a critic might say when challenging another's statement: "We do not concede that the matter is as you claim, but even if we grant that it is, it yields no benefit for you."
Similarly here, the Almighty mentions that they will not help them. Even if they were to offer help, they would inevitably abandon that support, flee, and leave those being aided (the Jews) in the hands of the enemies.
A parallel to this verse is His statement: {And if Allah had known any good in them, He would have made them hear; and if He had made them hear, they would have turned away while they were turning aside} [8:23].
As for His statement, {then they would not be helped} [59:12c], there are two interpretations:
Then, the Almighty mentions that the fear the hypocrites have of the believers is more intense than their fear of Allah, saying:
{Your terror in their breasts is greater than the terror of Allah. That is because they are a people who do not comprehend.} [59:13]
