[The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds."

Al-Hashr (The Banishment): Verse 16

[16] Their likeness is as the likeness of Satan when he said to man: "Disbelieve!" Then, when he disbelieved, he said: "Indeed, I am free of you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds."

Exegesis (Tafsir):

This verse describes the likeness of the hypocrites who deceived Banu Nadir by saying: "If you are driven out, we will surely go out with you" (Al-Hashr: 11), but then they abandoned them and did not fulfill their covenant.

Their situation is likened to that of Satan when he says to man: "Disbelieve!" and then, once the man disbelieves, Satan disavows him, saying: "Indeed, I am free of you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds."

There are two main interpretations for this analogy:

  1. General Call to Disbelief: It refers to Satan's general invitation to all humanity to commit disbelief.
  2. Specific Incident (Battle of Badr): It refers to Satan inciting Quraysh on the Day of Badr, saying: "No one shall overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector." Then, when the Muslims prevailed, Satan fled, saying: "Indeed, I am free of you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds" (Al-Anfal: 48).

[17] So the end result for both of them was that they will be in the Fire, abiding therein forever. And that is the recompense of the wrongdoers.
