Surah Al-Hashr (59): Verse 18

Then, the Almighty returned to admonishing the believers, saying:

**{O you who have believed, fear Allah, and let every soul look at what it has put forth for tomorrow.}**
  • "Tomorrow" (الغد): This refers to the Day of Resurrection. It is named "tomorrow" because it closely follows one's present day.
  • The Indefiniteness of "Soul" (نفس): The use of the indefinite form for "soul" (نفس) serves to emphasize the individual responsibility of every soul to examine what it has prepared for the Hereafter. It is as if He is saying: "Let a single soul look into that matter."
  • The Indefiniteness of "Tomorrow" (الغد): The indefiniteness of "tomorrow" is for magnifying its status and obscuring its true nature, as if to say: "The true reality of that Tomorrow cannot be fully grasped due to its immense magnitude."

Then He said:

**{And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.}**

The command to fear Allah (اتقوا الله) is repeated for emphasis (ta'kīd). Alternatively, the first command might refer to fulfilling obligations (performing the wājibāt), while the second refers to abstaining from sins (leaving the ma'āṣī).

**{And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient (the *fāsiqūn*).}**
