Al-Hashr (The Gathering): (19) And be not like those...

Then the Almighty said: {And be not like those who forgot Allah, and so He made them forget themselves} (Al-Hashr: 19).

There are two interpretations regarding this verse:

  1. The First View (Al-Muqatilan said): They forgot the right (due) of Allah, so He made them forget the right of themselves, to the extent that they did not strive for what benefits them with Him.
  2. The Second View: {He made them forget themselves} means that on the Day of Resurrection, He will show them such terrors that they will forget themselves, similar to His saying: {Their eyes will not turn away, nor will their hearts be at ease} (Ibrahim: 43), and {And you see the people as if they were intoxicated, yet they are not intoxicated} (Al-Hajj: 2).

Then He said: {Those are the defiantly disobedient (Fāsiqūn)}. The purpose of this statement is reproach (Dhamm).

Know that when the Almighty guided the believers to what is beneficial for them on the Day of Resurrection by saying: {And let every soul look at what it has put forth for tomorrow} (Al-Hashr: 18), and threatened the disbelievers by saying: {like those who forgot Allah, and so He made them forget themselves}, He then clarified the distinction between the two groups by saying:

**{The companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise are not equal. The companions of Paradise—they are the successful ones.}** (Al-Hashr: 20)
