Verse range: 6:66-67

Open in Qurani

| Al-An'am (The Cattle): (66 - 67) And your people have denied it...

The pronoun in the statement: {And your people have denied it} (wa kadhdhabu bihi) has several interpretations:

  1. First Opinion: It refers to the punishment mentioned in the preceding verse, {and it is the Truth} (referring to the punishment being inevitable).
  2. Second Opinion: The pronoun in (bihi) refers to the Qur'an, which is the Truth, meaning its truthfulness as a revelation from God.
  3. Third Opinion: It refers to the varied signs/proofs (tasreef al-āyāt), which are the Truth, because they denied that these things served as proofs.

Then He said: {Say: I am not a guardian over you} (Qul lastu 'alaykum bi-wakīl). This means: I am not a keeper over you such that I would hold you accountable for your denial and turning away from accepting the proofs. I am only a warner, and Allah is the One who will recompense you for your deeds.

Ibn Abbas and the commentators said that this verse was abrogated by the verse of fighting (Qitāl), but this view is considered weak.

Then the Almighty said: {For every piece of news there is a fixed time/place} (li-kulli nabā'in mustaqarr).

  • Al-Mustaqarr (the fixed time/place) can mean the location where the event settles, or it can mean the settling/occurrence itself. This is because verbal nouns derived from verbs beyond the triliteral form often resemble the passive participle (e.g., mudkhal and mukhraj meaning 'the act of entering' and 'the act of exiting').
  • If interpreted as the act of settling: The meaning is that every report Allah informs us of has a specific time or place where it will occur without fail or delay.
  • If interpreted as the settling itself: The meaning is that every promise and threat from Allah must eventually materialize, and they must know that the matter is exactly as Allah has informed them when it appears and descends.

What the disbelievers were warned about could refer to the punishment of the Hereafter, or it could refer to the Muslims gaining dominance over the disbelievers through warfare, killing, and subjugation in this world.

7 < { And when you see those who plunge into Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in a conversation other than it. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people. } > 7 !

Regarding the Almighty's saying: {And when you see those who plunge into Our signs, then turn away from them until they engage in a conversation other than it. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people}.
