Tafsir of Al-Jumu'ah 62:6

Surah Al-Jumu'ah (The Friday Prayer): Verse 6

Original Text Analysis & Translation:

This verse is part of what has already been explained.

It has been recited as: {فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ} (Fatamannaw al-mawt) with a kasra (short 'i' sound) on the waw.

And {هَادُوا} (hādu) means "become Jews" (i.e., adopted Judaism).

They used to say: "We are the children of God and His beloved ones."

If what you claim is true, and you are certain of it, then ask God to cause your death and swiftly transfer you to the abode of His honor, which He has prepared for His allies.

The poet said:

"He who dies and finds rest is not truly dead; The only dead one is the dead among the living."

Therefore, they should seek death if this is their situation.

And His statement, the Exalted: {وَلَا يَتَمَنَّوْنَهُ أَبَدًا بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ} (wa lā yatamannawnahu abadan bimā qaddamat aydīhim) – meaning, because of what they have brought forth: disbelief and the distortion of the verses.

It is mentioned once with the emphasis particle ({وَلَنْ يَتَمَنَّوْهُ أَبَدًا} - wa lan yatamannawhu abadan), and once without that emphasis ({وَلَا يَتَمَنَّوْنَهُ} - wa lā yatamannawnahu).

And His statement: {أَبَدًا * وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ} (abadan wa Allāhu ‘alīmun biẓ-ẓālimīn) – meaning, He is fully aware of their injustice, such as distorting the verses, their obstinacy against them, and their defiance.

{قُلْ إِنَّ الْمَوْتَ الَّذِي تَفِرُّونَ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ مُلَاقِيكُمْ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَى عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ}

Translation:

Say: "Indeed, the death from which you flee—it will surely meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
