Tafsir
Verse range: 64:5-7
[64:5] Did the news of those who disbelieved before you not reach you? So they tasted the evil consequence of their affair, and for them is a painful punishment.
**Analysis:** 1. The address is to the disbelievers of Mecca. 2. This refers to the suffering they experienced in this world and the punishment prepared for them in the Hereafter. 3. "So they tasted the evil consequence of their affair" means they tasted the severity of their matter, similar to the verse: "Taste! Indeed, you are the mighty, the noble one!" (referring to the humiliation they faced). 4. "That is because when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they said: 'Shall a human being guide us?' So they disbelieved and turned away." (This part is implied contextually leading to the next statement). 5. "And Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy." This follows the previous context. *Al-Hamid* (The Praiseworthy) means deserving of praise by His essence, or it can mean the Praiser. 6. The statement "That is because..." refers to the fact that they denied that the Messenger could be human, yet they did not deny that their idols could be objects of worship (stones). Thus, they disbelieved and turned away. 7. Allah has been free from needing their obedience and worship since eternity.
[64:6] That is because when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they said, "Shall a human being guide us?" So they disbelieved and turned away. And Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
**Analysis of the preceding context (as detailed in the source):** 1. **Regarding the structure:** The text notes that the disbelievers "disbelieved and turned away." Why mention both? Because their disbelief was accompanied by statements like, "Shall a human being guide us?" which implies complete rejection and turning away (*Tawalli*). Thus, they disbelieved, and their speech indicated turning away. 2. **Regarding "And Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy":** The sequence might suggest that the turning away (*Tawalli*) and Allah's Self-Sufficiency (*Istighna'*) occurred simultaneously. However, Allah has always been Self-Sufficient. The meaning here, as noted in *Al-Kashshaf*, is that Allah's Self-Sufficiency became manifest when He did not compel or force them into faith, despite His power to do so.
[64:7] The disbelievers claim that they will not be resurrected. Say, "Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected. Then you will surely be informed of what you did. And that is easy for Allah."
**Analysis:** 1. "The disbelievers claim that they will not be resurrected." 2. "Say, 'Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected.'" * This affirmation (*Bala* - Yes) confirms the resurrection. * It might be instruction to the Prophet (PBUH) on how to swear an oath regarding the Resurrection, similar to other oaths in the Quran, serving as emphasis. 3. "And that is easy for Allah." * It means nothing can divert this decree. * Alternatively, since they denied resurrection after becoming dust, Allah informs them that recreating them is easier in the intellect than creating them initially. 4. **Issue regarding the Oath:** How does the oath benefit when they denied the Prophet's message? * Even if they denied the prophethood, they believed that the Prophet sincerely believed in his Lord without reservation. Therefore, they knew he would not swear by his Lord unless the truth of this news was clearer to him than the sun. This is the benefit of the oath. 5. The news is further confirmed by the addition of *Laam* and *Noon* (the emphatic particles), making it like an oath upon an oath.
[64:8] So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Light which We have sent down. And Allah, with what you do, is Acquainted.
[64:9] The Day He will gather you for the Day of Assembly—that is the Day of Mutual Loss and Gain (Taghabun). And whoever believes in Allah and does righteousness, He will remove from him his sins and admit him to Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
[64:10] But those who disbelieved and denied Our verses—those are the companions of the Fire, abiding therein eternally, and wretched is the destination.
