Surah Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty)
And certainly did those who came before them deny, and how [severe] was My rejection (Nakīr)!
- This refers to the people of 'Ad, Thamud, and the disbelievers of previous nations.
- There are two interpretations regarding the meaning of "Nakīr" (My rejection/denial):
- Al-Wāḥidī said: It means My denial and My changing [of their state]. Did they not find the punishment to be true?
- Abū Muslim said: Nakīr refers to the punishment of the denier.
- The dropping of the final yā’ (in nadhīrī and nakīrī) is done so that these verses match the rhyme scheme of the preceding and succeeding verses.
- The proof (Burhān) [for their punishment] is that God Almighty mentioned things that indicate the perfection of His power. Once this is established, it is proven that God is capable of inflicting all types of punishment upon them. This proof is established through several aspects:
Do they not see the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None holds them up except the Most Merciful. Indeed, He is, of all things, Seeing.
- This verse presents a clear proof of God's power.
- The birds are seen spreading their wings and then folding them in flight.
- "None holds them up except the Most Merciful (Al-Raḥmān)." This highlights that the maintenance of their flight—preventing them from falling—is solely dependent upon God's sustaining power and mercy.
- "Indeed, He is, of all things, Seeing (Baṣīr)." This confirms that the One who sustains them and possesses this perfect power is fully aware of everything.
