Verse range: 67:25

Open in Qurani

The Sovereign (Al-Mulk): (25) And they say, "When is this [promise]?"

There are several issues concerning this verse:

Issue 1: The Verb Form

Abu Muslim stated that since Allah uses the present/future tense verb yaqūlūn (they say), this could imply:

  1. The statement made by the disbelievers in the future.
  2. It could refer to the past, meaning: "They were saying this promise."

Issue 2: The Intent Behind Their Question

Perhaps they were saying this:

  1. As a form of mockery.
  2. To imply to the weak (believers) that since the promised event is delayed, it has no basis or reality.

Issue 3: The Nature of the Promised Event

What is the "promise" being asked about? There are two views:

  1. It refers to the Resurrection (the Hour).
  2. It refers to punishment in general.

The benefit of this difference of opinion will become clear later, God willing.

Then Allah answered this question with His saying:

**Say, "The knowledge is only with Allah, and I am only a clear Warner."** (Qur'an 67:25)
