Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered: whether Allah should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"
Tafsir
Verse range: 67:28
Know that this response belongs to the second category of what the disbelievers said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he warned them of God's punishment.
It is narrated that the disbelievers of Mecca used to invoke destruction upon the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and the believers, just as the Almighty said:
"Or do they say, 'A poet? We await for him some misfortune [of time].'" (At-Tur: 30) And He said: "Or have you thought that the Messenger and the believers would not return to their families ever?" (Al-Fath: 12)
Then, the Almighty responded to this in two ways:
The First Way: This is the meaning of this verse. The meaning is: Say to them: Whether God Almighty causes me to perish by death or grants me mercy by delaying my appointed term, what comfort or benefit is there for you in that? And who can protect you from God's punishment if it befalls you? Do you think that the idols can protect you, or anything else? If you know that there is no protector for you, then why do you not hold fast to what will save you from the punishment, which is the knowledge of Monotheism (Tawhid), Prophethood, and Resurrection?
The Second Way of response is the Almighty's saying:
{ Say: "He is the Most Compassionate (Ar-Rahman); in Him we have believed, and in Him we rely. And soon you will know who is in clear error." }
