Surah Al-Mulk 67:9



ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ

They will say," Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allah has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

The King (Al-Mulk): (9) They said, "Yes, indeed..."

First Point:

Regarding the Almighty's saying: {They said, "Yes, indeed, a warner came to us, but we denied him and said, 'Allah has sent down nothing.'"}

Know that their statement: {Yes, indeed, a warner came to us, but we denied him} is an admission on their part of God's justice, acknowledging that God removed any excuse from them by sending messengers. However, they denied the messengers and said: {Allah has sent down nothing.}

As for the Almighty's saying: {You are not but in great error,} there are two issues concerning it:

Issue 1: There are two interpretations regarding this verse:

The First View (The more apparent one): It is part of the speech of the disbelievers, addressing the warners (messengers).
The Second View: It is possible that this is the speech of the gatekeepers (of Hell) directed towards the disbelievers. The meaning would be that when the disbelievers said that statement, the gatekeepers replied to them: {You are not but in great error.}

Issue 2: It is possible that the intended meaning of "great error" (ḍalāl kabīr) refers to the error they were upon in the worldly life. It is also possible that "error" here refers to utter destruction/perdition. Another possibility is that the punishment for the error has been named by the name of the error itself.

{And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."}

The King (Al-Mulk): (9) They said, "Yes, indeed..."
