Surah Al-Qalam (The Pen): Verse 26
{ فلما رأوها قالوا . . . . . }
(When they saw it, they said...)
There are several interpretations regarding their statement:
- First Interpretation: When they saw their garden burned, they thought they had lost their way. Therefore, they said: { إنا لضالون } (Indeed, we are lost). Then, upon closer inspection, when they recognized it was indeed their garden, they said: { بل نحن محرومون } (Nay, rather we are deprived). (Deprived) because of the misfortune resulting from their resolve to be miserly and withhold from the poor.
- Second Interpretation: It is possible that when they saw their garden burned, they said: { إنا لضالون } (Indeed, we are lost) in the sense that they were misguided in their intention to withhold from the poor, and in their belief that they were capable of benefiting from it. Instead, the matter has turned against them, and now we are the ones who are deprived.

(The most moderate among them said, "Did I not tell you, 'Why do you not glorify [Allah]?'")
