Al-Qalam (The Pen): (29) They said, "Exalted is our Lord..."

They spoke what they were called to speak about, but this was after the destruction of Basra.

The Third [Interpretation/Context]:

Al-Hasan said: This glorification (Tasbīḥ) is the prayer. It is as if they were being lazy in their prayer. Otherwise, it would have prohibited them from lewdness and wrongdoing, and it would have prompted them to persevere in the remembrance of Allah and in saying, "If Allah wills" (In shā’ Allāh).

Then, when Allah recounted that the middle group commanded them to repent and to glorify Him, He recounted things about them:

  1. First: They occupied themselves with glorification, saying immediately, "Exalted is our Lord," meaning, nothing occurs in His dominion except by His will and decree. When they described Allah with transcendence (Tanzīh) and sanctification (Taqdīs), they confessed their evil deeds and said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
  1. Second:
**{Then some of them turned to others, blaming one another.}**
