Al-Qalam (The Pen): Verses 37-38

[Verse 37]

**Am lakum kitābun...** (Or do you have a book...)

This is similar to His saying, the Exalted: {Or do you have a clear authority? Then bring forth your book} (As-Saffat: 156).

The original form would have been an (that) with a fatḥa (vowel sign) because it implies "that you study/believe you have what you choose," but when the lām (preposition 'for') came, it was vocalized with a kasra (vowel sign).

To takhyyaru (choose) something means to select its best part. Similarly, tankhuluhu (to sift it) means to take what has been sifted out.

[Verse 38]

**Am lakum aymānun 'alaynā bālighatun ilá yawmi l-qiyāmah inna lakum lamā taḥkumūn** (Or do you have oaths binding upon Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection, that you will have whatever you decree?)
